Two Days Study tour in Kwatha, Tengnoupal District for defining trade and commerce related problem

About

Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) of Manipur Technical University has organised “2 Days Study tour in Kwatha, Tengnoupal District for defining trade and commerce related problem” on 11th and 12th November 2021.

Objective

The main objective of the study tour to Kwatha was to identify problems and also to bring solutions in the form of ideas or any other feasible solutions for the people of Kwatha. Further, it was to align with the ‘Go to Village’ Mission of CM of Manipur. IIC team comprising of seven faculty and thirty nine students along with the staff of MTU visited Kwatha and was able to identify the general problems, more specifically trade and commerce problems faced by the people of Kwatha. The faculty and students had a discussion with Takhellambam Sanjoy, General Secretary of Kwatha Welfare Youth Club, and other members of the village.

Problems Identified

  1. The main problem faced by the people of Kwatha is the poor road infrastructure. Due to poor road infrastructure, transportation of goods and services is inefficient.
  2. The main occupation of the villagers is agriculture. The problems associated with agricultural activities in Kwatha are invasion of the farms by wild animals, poor irrigational facilities, negative effects from jhum cultivations and inability to produce agricultural surplus. Since the agricultural productions are mainly for self–consumption, the main source of income is commercial crops like soibum. However, the soibum production of the Kwatha people has not got any recognition or property rights. The producers are still struggling with the high cost packaging and transportation problems
  3. There are very limited job opportunities for the educated people at Kwatha. After Graduation or Higher Degree, most of them become underemployed by working in agricultural activities. Apart from poor economics infrastructure, the villagers also face the problem of poor health, telecommunications and education services
  4. However, during the Kwatha festival, the villagers become self–employed and earn higher income. Kwatha Village has a lot of potential in terms of tourism, commercial crops, and other activities.

Ideas generated to solve the problem of the village

  1. Final year students are developing a website to promote the tourism in Kwatha Village
  2. Mobile signal repeater
  3. IoT based farm management to control invasion of agricultural produce by wild animals
