Introduction
The World Intellectual Property Day 2025 celebration at Manipur Technical University (MTU) was organized on 2nd May 2025 by the IPR Cell, MTU, in collaboration with the Manipur Science & Technology Council (MASTEC) under the aegis of TIFAC-DST, Government of India. Although the official World IP Day falls on 26th April, this year’s event at MTU had to be postponed due to a state wide general strike coinciding with the date, along with scheduling constraints of MASTEC officials. Despite the delay, the rescheduled programme was conducted with great enthusiasm and participation. The 2025 theme, “IP and Music: Feel the Beat”, emphasized the relationship between intellectual property and creativity, particularly in music, while also fostering a broader awareness of IP rights and innovation. The celebration featured technical sessions, expert talks, a grant distribution ceremony under MASTEC’s student innovation scheme, and interactive sessions with key dignitaries. The event offered a valuable platform for engaging students and faculty in discussions on the role of intellectual property in education, entrepreneurship, and cultural preservation.
Objectives of the Programme
The primary objective of organizing the World Intellectual Property Day 2025 at Manipur Technical University is to raise awareness about the importance of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) in fostering creativity, innovation, and economic growth. This year’s celebration, under the theme “IP and Music: Feel the Beat”, aims to enlighten students, faculty, and innovators about the role of intellectual property in protecting and promoting original works, especially in the creative arts and engineering domains. Through technical sessions, expert talks, and the distribution of partial financial assistance under MASTEC’s “Innovative R&D Projects for Engineering Students” scheme, the programme seeks to encourage a culture of research, innovation, and legal protection of original ideas among young minds. Additionally, the event intends to create opportunities for interaction with key stakeholders from the government, industry, and academia to inspire future collaborations and support systems for innovation in the region.
Event Outcome
The celebration of World Intellectual Property Day 2025 at Manipur Technical University, in collaboration with MASTEC under the aegis of TIFAC-DST, Government of India, was a resounding success. The event effectively raised awareness among students and faculty about the importance of intellectual property rights and their role in nurturing creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship. The engaging technical sessions on IPR and Geographical Indication (GI), delivered by experts from MASTEC and MTU, provided valuable insights into the mechanisms for protecting and commercializing creative and traditional knowledge. A major highlight of the programme was the distribution of partial financial assistance (Rs. 20,000 each) to five selected final-year engineering student teams under MASTEC’s “Innovative R&D Projects for Engineering Students” scheme—four of which were from MTU, reflecting the university’s growing culture of innovation. The interaction between dignitaries and students, especially with the Chief Guest, inspired many to pursue intellectual property protection for their projects. The event concluded with the distribution of personalized participation certificates, reinforcing the value of each participant’s engagement. Overall, the celebration not only marked the significance of World IP Day but also strengthened the IPR ecosystem at MTU and encouraged greater collaboration for future innovation-driven initiatives.
Conclusion
The celebration of World Intellectual Property Day 2025 at Manipur Technical University was a meaningful and impactful event, despite being rescheduled due to unforeseen circumstances. The enthusiastic participation of students, faculty, and esteemed guests demonstrated a growing awareness and interest in the field of intellectual property.
