Signature analysis, monitoring
Ice calving events and marginal
changes using ScatSat-1 data
over the Antarctica

Scope of the study involves the
characterization of signatures of
SCATSAT-1 data for various applications
such as ice calving and change
detection. The project also aims at
developing some techniques for
automatic extraction of various Antarctic
features. It also aims at Develop
methodology using conjunctive use of
both SCATSAT-1and SAR data for
automatically identify various polar ice
features, support the process study as
well as safer ship navigation.
The major objectives of the study are
Backscatter signature analysis of
different ice features using Ku & C-band
Signature library generation with respect
to Ice features Change detection
analysis of signatures Technique
development for extraction of various
Antarctic features such as dynamics of
polynya, ice calving events and marginal
changes

Development of InSAR based
techniques for high resolution
surface topography and ice
velocity
–A project under
Microwave and hyper spectral
techniques for earth resources
application and management (MAHTRAM / मातरम)

This project focuses on the
establishment of methodologies for
application of satellite-based
Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar
(InSAR) and Differential InSAR
(DInSAR) techniques to produce high
resolution Surface Topography,
and high resolution glacier velocity over the Polar
Regions of the Earth and the Himalayan
glaciers.
The project also emphasizes on the
creation of practical software modules
that can be incorporated to SAC-ISRO’s
Microwave Data Analysis Software
(MIDAS), for use with similar data from
future Indian satellite-based SAR
missions as well as the upcoming
collaborated (ISRO-NASA) missions
such as NISAR.

Spatio-temporal investigation of
Arctic and Antarctic sea ice area
and thickness
- A project under Cryosphere
Science and Applications
Program (CAP)

This project uses Earth-observing
satellite sensors for
• Long-term analysis of sea ice
extent, concentration and area in the
spatial and temporal domain in the Polar
Regions, to understand various sea ice
processes.
• Characterization of sea ice in the
selected regions near Indian Antarctic
stations using Synthetic Aperture Radar
data
• Long-term assessment of the
Arctic and the Antarctic sea ice
thickness
• Process-based studies to
understand the impact of climate
change on polar sea ice cover
Study area includes the sea ice regions
of the Arctic and Antarctic regions.
