Event Description

A one day academic site visit was organized to the ongoing Upgradation of Cycling Velodrome at Khuman Lampak to expose the Civil Engineering students to practical aspects of construction and upgradation works, structural components, construction methods and materials, quality control, safety practices and site supervision. The visit also gave them an opportunity to interact with PWD Manipur engineers and helped them to relate theoretical knowledge with practical field applications.

Plan of action

To organize a one day academic site visit to the ongoing Upgradation of Cycling Velodrome at Khuman Lampak for the Civil Engineering students & faculty members. The visit was arranged to provide an opportunity to the students to see the ongoing construction and upgradation activities, structural and civil engineering works, construction materials and methods, quality control, safety practices, site supervision and project execution. The visit also aimed to give students an opportunity to interact with practicing PWD engineers to understand the practical challenges involved in the execution and supervision of infrastructure projects.

Action Report

One-day academic site visit of the ongoing Upgradation of Cycling Velodrome at Khuman Lampak was conducted on 16th September, 2026 by the Department of Civil Engineering, Manipur Technical University with 37 students and 7 faculty/staff members. During the visit, students got the practical exposure to various aspects of civil engineering works including structural components, construction practices, materials, site execution, quality control, safety measures and project supervision and witnessed the ongoing upgradation and construction activities at the site.

The students interacted with the officials of PWD Manipur, Building Division No. III, who explained the ongoing works, construction procedures, technical considerations, and practical aspects of project execution. The officials also responded to the students’ queries and provided valuable guidance, thereby helping them relate theoretical concepts learned in the classroom to actual field practices.

The Department of Civil Engineering, Manipur Technical University, sincerely expresses its gratitude to Shri Shijagurumayum Rakesh Sharma, Executive Engineer; Shri Keisham Biju, Assistant Engineer; Shri Ningombam Bishwajit, Assistant Engineer; and Shri Maisnam Ramakant Singh, Junior Engineer, PWD Manipur for kindly permitting the students and faculty to visit the site and for their valuable technical guidance, explanations, and support throughout the visit.

Outcomes / Impact of the activity

The site visit provided students with valuable firsthand exposure to an ongoing infrastructure upgradation project and helped bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical field applications. Students gained a better understanding of construction and upgradation practices, structural components, construction materials, quality control, safety measures, site supervision, and project execution. Interaction with PWD engineers enhanced their understanding of the practical responsibilities of civil engineers and the technical and managerial aspects involved in executing infrastructure projects. The visit also increased students’ awareness of real-world construction challenges and professional engineering practices.

Feedback

The students provided positive feedback and found the site visit highly informative and beneficial. They appreciated the opportunity to observe the ongoing Upgradation of Cycling Velodrome and understand the actual sequence and practices involved in infrastructure development. The interaction with PWD engineers was particularly useful in clarifying their technical queries and understanding the practical application of classroom concepts. The students expressed interest in participating in more such site visits to ongoing civil engineering projects to enhance their practical knowledge and professional skills.
