One-day site visits to the Sewage Treatment Plant, Lamphelpat, Manipur

Event Name

One-day site visits to the Sewage Treatment Plant, Lamphelpat, Manipur

Event Date

27th  February 2026

Event Description

A one-day educational site visit to the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Lamphelpat, Imphal West, Manipur, is organized for the students of 6th Semester, Civil Engineering Department, to provide practical exposure to wastewater treatment and urban sanitation systems. The plant, developed under the Imphal Sewerage Project Phase-I by the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Government of Manipur, plays a significant role in treating municipal sewage and protecting water bodies like the Nambul River. During the visit, students will observe various treatment stages such as screening, sedimentation, biological treatment, sludge management, and final discharge, and interact with plant engineers to understand operational procedures, design capacity, and environmental standards, thereby bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and field practice.

Plan of action

The Department of Civil Engineering, Manipur Technical University, will obtain prior permission from the Drainage & Sewerage Division, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Government of Manipur, Lamphelpat, and finalize the visit schedule in consultation with plant officials. Students of the 6th Semester will be briefed about safety guidelines and wastewater treatment processes before the visit. On the scheduled day, the group will travel to the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Lamphelpat, where plant engineers will conduct a guided tour explaining various treatment units and operational procedures. An interactive session will follow for discussion and clarification of technical concepts. After the visit, students will be required to submit a report to evaluate their learning outcomes and practical understanding.

Action Report

A one-day educational site visit to the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), Lamphelpat, Imphal West, was successfully conducted for the students of the 6th Semester, Civil Engineering Department, Manipur Technical University, in coordination with the Drainage & Sewerage Division, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Government of Manipur. During the visit, plant officials explained the design, treatment capacity, and operational procedures, and students observed various stages of wastewater treatment including screening, sedimentation, biological treatment, sludge management, and final discharge. An interactive session was also held to discuss practical challenges and environmental standards, and the visit effectively enhanced the students’ practical knowledge by linking classroom theory with real field applications.

Outcomes / Impact of the activity

The site visit enhanced the practical understanding of wastewater treatment processes among the students of 6th Semester, Civil Engineering Department, by providing real-time exposure to the functioning of the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Lamphelpat. Students gained clear knowledge of treatment units, operational procedures, sludge management, and environmental compliance standards. The activity bridged the gap between theoretical concepts and field applications, improved technical awareness in environmental engineering, and motivated students to understand sustainable sanitation practices and their importance in protecting public health and water resources.

Feedback

The students expressed positive feedback regarding the one-day site visit to the Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), Lamphelpat. They found the visit highly informative and beneficial in understanding the practical aspects of wastewater treatment and plant operations. The interaction with plant engineers helped clarify many theoretical concepts studied in class, particularly in environmental engineering subjects. Students appreciated the opportunity to observe real-time treatment processes and suggested organizing more such industrial visits in the future to enhance their practical exposure and technical knowledge.
