| Coordinator’s Statement | The Department of Civil Engineering observed the National Engineer’s Day on 15th September, 2023 under the theme “engineering for a sustainable future”. Engineers are arguably the greatest pioneers that drive human advancement. Unlike doctors or lawyers, an engineer’s legacy is not limited to the products of their profession; the buildings they construct or the gadgets they design. Their creations not only serve as a catalyst for social and economic growth, facilitating hundreds, if not thousands of jobs, and enabling the gears of society to turn, but they also serve as the very foundation for the lives of the future generations. As such, the responsibilities that an engineer bears are heavy, for their actions directly impact not only the lives of the 8 billion human population, but the millions of species of plants and animals on the earth. But an engineer’s responsibility does not end there. The actions each person take today decide how the future generations will live, and all our present comfort comes as the expense of those yet to come. This is more so for engineers whose decisions and creations will have an everlasting impact on the future earth and its inhabitants. All this is to say, engineers require not only their technical domain knowledge but an equally, if not more, important moral knowledge that will enable them to strive to become not only the technological pioneers for posterity but also their protectors as well. |

To highlight the role of engineers in shaping the technological landscape of modern society To ponder upon the historical connection and the legacy of Sir M. Visvesvaraya, on whose memory the National Engineer’s Day is celebrated To impress upon the duties and responsibilities of engineers on not only the present society and environment but also on future generations and the future earth. |
