World Environment Day Celebration

On this day, the 5th of June, 2022, Manipur Technical University’s Innovation Council, IIC MTU, commemorated the Ministry of Education mandated “World Environment Day” at MTU Campus. With Sweden as the host country, the slogan for World Environment Day 2022 is “Only One Earth”, which focuses on “living sustainably in harmony with nature.” In this regard, the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor of MTU gave an important speech on World Environment Day. The Vice Chancellor highlighted the importance to the faculty, staff, and students of Article 51-A (g), which deals with the fundamental duties of the citizens and states: “It shall be the duty of every citizen of India to protect and improve the natural environment, including forests, lakes, rivers, and wildlife, and to have compassion for living creatures.” He emphasised the need to conserve, preserve, and protect our environment. In particular, we must fight for climate change, sustainability and pollution. Furthermore, he mentioned that Environmental protection is also under the State List. The event is also registered under UN Environment Programme.

There were distributions of T-shirts, an expert talk by Nongmaithem Anand, Assistant Professor (MTU), tree plantation and spreading of awareness on proper plastic waste at Wahengbam Leikai Bus Parking. Nongmaithem Anand pointed out that we have reached an emergency level or alarming level of all types of pollution happening globally. One of the findings has pointed out that there is microplastic in our bloodstream. He stated that we need to find an affordable substitute for plastic bags and pathways for bicycles and pedestrians. He suggested building and living in eco-friendly homes, which include cities, work places, and worship places. From an individual level, we need to learn and practise avoidance of plastic and other non-biodegradable goods while going to a picnic or any gathering. The individual and civil society both should play a larger role in raising awareness and protecting our environment.

The event was attended by the faculty, staff, and students of MTU. The significance of organising such a day is to align ourselves with nature harmoniously and to promote sustainable living.

One Day Workshop on Employment through Intrapreneurship

In a workshop held at Manipur Technical University in Imphal on the theme ‘Employment through Intrapreneurship’, Saswati Sinha, the India Head of Human Resource, Evalueserve who was present for this workshop as an expert echoed ‘I will not recruit you for skills but for values’ to hundreds of boys and girls of Engineering and MBA streams of the State University.

While Saswati deliberated on a wide perspective of Industry expectations she also highlighted that industries are now looking for a professional attitude rather than a skills set. She highlighted that though freshers come with a technical degree anyways and that they have to further train them up with the requisite organisation-specific technical knowhow but what is most difficult to acquire is the value system, the character, integrity, and a positive mindset which takes years to inculcate.

She informed that what they are looking for is attitude and they believe people who are in tier 2 and 3 colleges, want something to prove do bring in that attitude. The other value the organisations are looking for are diligence, and an innovative mindset, India is all about degrees but we need something more than only degrees.

Earlier the Vice Chancellor Dr. Bhabeswar Tongbram, welcomed the students and the resource persons of the workshop Patricia Buhril, Corporate Trainer of Overseas Point, and Biswadeep Gupta, Managing Trustee of KRC foundation besides Saswati Sinha. He stated that the students would be immensely benefitted from this interaction and get an insight view from resources like Saswati who had come all the way from Gurgaon to speak to his students. Dr. Tongbram wholeheartedly welcomed all the resources and expects more such engagements in the future.

This event was organised by MTU in association with Overseas Point under the Institution’s Innovation Council a Ministry of HRD initiative.
